August UGANDA
Please pray for the country of Uganda: • for all who work in the country to overcome poverty and improve standards of living; • for continued progress to be made in preventing AIDs, improved treatment for the 3million affected by the disease and care for the 2 million orphans; • for internally displaced people, rape victims and former child soldiers still traumatised after the rebel uprisings and fighting in the north; • for a reduction in corruption in the government and legal system.
The VickersPlease pray for our BMS World Mission link missionaries, Alex and Jackie Vickers, and their daughters, Harriet and Bethany: For Alex: • that promised funding will come through for the farming programme developed by Alex in consultation with twelve villages in Gulu district, so that it can start as planned in September; •that these communities will be able to rebuild their farms and livelihoods after the long period of war. For Jackie: •for training workshops for Christian teachers to be held from 15th – 19th August; •for improved resources (balls and Bibles!) for the local schools.
For Harriet and Bethany: That they will settle in well and make progress as they move up to the next year of their education in Rainbow International School. Alex and Jackie have described Uganda in this way:
Although Kampala gives the impression of being a modern city the infrastructure is weak. Power and water cuts are commonplace, children beg in the streets, quality healthcare is beyond the reach of many, roads are poorly maintained, many people feel undervalued and underpaid. This is a breeding ground for corruption. There are a large number of NGOs working in Uganda, there are many churches of different denominations and yet sadly there is much disunity and, it seems, poor use of resources. This is their prayer for Uganda: Dear Father, we lift the country of Uganda to you. Many people here call themselves by your name, yet it seems that many might not really know you. People may state where they pray on a Sunday, yet not let what they hear affect the rest of the week. Lord, break through in all our lives, release your Spirit, heal broken relationships, broken communities, broken lives. Lord make your light shine in Uganda, overcome the powers of darkness. Strip away any façade, break down barriers and build your church. Let your kingdom come in this place.
